Exploring the Foundations of Mindfulness (pt. 1)

Mindfulness meditation is an extraordinary practice that can decrease stress, improve sleep, improve memory and problem-solving and help reduce anxiety and depression. And, though these are wonderful benefits to experience, the cultivation of a calmer, more present heart and mind is perhaps an even greater benefit of this style of meditation.

The four foundations of mindfulness were established by the Buddha millennia ago, and they continue to guide us in this practice today. By nurturing mindfulness of the body, feeling tone, the mind and the “dhammas” (how we relate to aspects of our nature and the experiences of life), we become more aware of what is influencing us throughout the day and this awareness ultimately leads us to more understanding. When we begin to understand, we begin to realize that we can make choices that lead to more happiness and an easeful mind.

In this 4-week series, we will learn about and practice the foundations of mindfulness, bringing these essential tools to our busy lives. Sessions will be in-person at The Episcopal Church of St. Mary-in-the-Highlands, Parish Hall, in Cold Spring, New York.
