Cultivating Kind Awareness: Bringing Ease and Rest to the Heart and Mind

  • Peace Hill at Avila 711 Mason Road Durham, NC 27712 United States (map)

Our minds are vast and spacious…and yet we can get caught in small internal worlds of fear, judgment and automatic thinking on a regular basis. These painful, habitual ways of relating to ourselves, to others and to the experience of life itself cause us all great suffering. Is there a way to cut through these patterns of suffering? Is there a way to bring more peace and steadiness to our minds? Absolutely.

The practice of mindfulness (or loving-awareness) is a simple and effective method to become aware of the tapestry of our minds, our hearts and our bodies, and to meet what we experience with a kind and loving heart. By gently cultivating a receptive awareness via reflection and meditation, we are more able to clearly see patterns of thinking, emotional states and bodily sensations that make up our experience. Developing loving-kindness leads us back to our heart’s innate capacity to care and to meet life with kindness and compassion. What results is a more spacious and liberated heart and mind.

In this residential retreat, we will explore these natural capacities of heart and mind through teachings, sitting and walking meditation, heart practices and interactive experiences. This retreat is silent except for teacher-led Q&A and other practice meetings. Some meditation experience is suggested.

This retreat is available online as well. Whether registering for in-person or online, please plan on attending the full retreat. (Partial retreat participation is not available.)

No one will be turned away for lack of funds. Please contact Ash if financial assistance is needed.
